Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR revealed with 287bhp

Inspired by the racing car of the same name, the TCR comes with a 287bhp engine and a top speed of 161mph

As a swansong to the current generation of the Golf, Volkswagen has revealed a race-inspired version of the GTI before the next iteration is revealed later this year.

Called the GTI TCR, it draws from the touring car of the same name and is fitted with the same engine and seven-speed transmission found in the GTI Performance from last year.

But here, the turbocharged, four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine comes with a 45bhp boost, so it now produces 287bhp and means the TCR can go from 0-60mph in just 5.4 seconds.

The standard top speed is 155mph, but customers can choose to increase the limit up to 161mph if they so wish.

For high-end performance, the TCR is fitted with a front differential lock, perforated brake discs and driving profile selection – while two packages can be applied that can add adaptive chassis control, semi-slick racetrack tyres and a rear damping system.

Despite the sporty nature of the model, it still comes with a high level of specification, such as front assist emergency braking, an active info digital instrument display and LED headlights.

The model comes as standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats with microfiber/fabric upholstery, a leather sports steering, puddle lights and a sports body kit.

Customers can also choose to add honeycomb decals, carbon mirror caps and a black roof.

Although prices are yet to confirmed, it is expected to cost in the region of £35,000.

The GTI TCR is set to be the last model to be revealed under the current Golf guise, as the next generation as already been teased before its unveiling in the middle of this year.
