Volkswagen ID.4 crowned World Car of the Year

The new electric SUV scooped one of the most prestigious awards in the industry

Volkswagen’s new electric ID.4 might have only just arrived in showrooms, but it’s already been crowned as the 2021 World Car of the Year.

Undoubtedly one of the most high-profile awards in the industry, the awards are voted for by more than 90 judges from across 28 different countries, with Volkswagen’s first electric SUV wiping the floor in voting.

The new ID.4 impresses with its fantastic electric range of up to 323 miles, along with a roomy interior and impressive raft of technology. Along with its smaller ID.3 sibling, it’s helping to establish a raft of new EVs for the German manufacturer.

Thomas Ulbrich, head of development at Volkswagen, said: ““The World Car of the Year award marks a great success for our entire ID team.

“We have succeeded in developing a car that starts the system change to e-mobility in the world's most important segment of compact SUVs and offers excellent everyday usability. With it, the ID.3 and the upcoming ID. models, we are making innovative electric mobility in the volume market something that can be experienced by everyone.”

The Honda e and Toyota Yaris were the two runners up in the overall awards categories, while other notable winners included the Mercedes S-Class being named World Luxury Car of the Year and the Porsche 911 Turbo being crowned World Performance Car of the Year.
