Volkswagen ID.4 gets more affordable with new entry-level battery options

The electric SUV also now qualifies for the government electric car grant

Volkswagen has introduced a pair of entry-level powertrains to its electric ID.4 SUV, which helps to bring the price down, and makes it eligible for the government’s revised electric car grant.

Since its launch earlier this year, the ID.4 has only been available with a larger battery and more powerful motor, which gave the model a starting price close to £40,000. However, new ‘Pure’ and ‘Pure Performance’ versions are now available for substantially less.

Both of these new models feature a 52kWh battery that enables a range of 213 miles, with the Pure version featuring an electric motor delivering 146bhp and 220Nm of torque, while the Pure Performance produces 168bhp and 310Nm of torque.

They're also each capable of charging at a rate of up to 100kW, with a charge to 80 per cent taking 38 minutes, while charging at home with a 7.2kW wallbox takes seven hours and 30 minutes.

Two trims are available on the new versions – City and Pure. Standard kit includes LED headlights, a 10-inch media system with satellite navigation, front parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. Style models then bring 18-inch alloy wheels, upgraded Matrix LED headlights, keyless entry and a reversing camera.

The government recently changed its grant for electric cars, with only new models costing under £35,000 now eligible for the £2,500 incentive, rather than £50,000 before. It meant models like the ID.4 soon became noticeably more expensive.

However, with the Pure battery and in entry-level City grade, the ID.4 slits beneath the £35,000 threshold, meaning it’s available from £32,150 with the grant deducted. Style Pure models are priced from £38,150.

Meanwhile the more powerful City Pure Performance is available from £36,030, or £39,530 in Style trim.

The ID.4 is currently Volkswagen’s largest electric car, with its roomy interior making it an appealing family choice. It’s also recently been crowned the 2021 World Car of the Year. The range is set to expand later this year, too, with the arrival of a sporty GTX version.
