Volkswagen marks Golf GTI’s 45th anniversary with new special edition

The Golf GTI Clubsport 45 marks the occasion

Volkswagen has unveiled a limited-edition version of its Golf GTI to mark the famous hot hatch’s 45th birthday.

The German manufacturer originally launched the sporty Golf in 1976 as a fun concept, with no plans to sell more than 5,000 examples. Flash forward to today and we are eight generations in, with more than 2.3 million being produced.

Volkswagen has a tradition of offering a new special edition every five years to celebrate the birthday, and the new model is the Clubsport 45.

Based on the regular Clubsport – already the ‘purest’ Golf GTI available – it’s powered by a 296bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine, and gets additional driver modes over the regular GTI to mark its sportier character.

This new edition brings the Race package as standard, though, which includes a sports exhaust, delimited top speed and gloss black 19-inch alloy wheels. It also gets suitable ‘45’ branding, while the inside features a new sports steering wheel.

Just 5,000 Clubsport 45 models are set to be produced, and while Volkswagen is yet to confirm UK pricing, the firm says the model will cost from €47,790 (£41,250) in Germany.
