Volkswagen reveals full-size T2 camper made from LEGO

Shown at the f.re.e leisure and travel fair, the model is built from 400,000 bricks and weighs 700kg.

Volkswagen has revealed at full-size replica of the Transporter T2 Bulli that is made entirely out of LEGO bricks.

This world record effort was built in just six weeks by one of the world’s 12 certified LEGO model makers Rene Hoffmeister, and his colleague Pascal Lenhard, and is comprised of 400,000 individual bricks.

On display at the f.re.e leisure and travel fair, which is taking place in Munich this week, the T2 comes with a fully furnished interior, a pop-up roof and sliding doors  which the pair said was very difficult to recreate.

At one point, the team found they were missing 20,000 transparent bricks for the windows of the van, and when their supplies dried up, this meant the team had to work much harder despite excessive planning.

Rene Hoffmeister said: “Essentially, we would have needed a nine-day week. However, as they don't exist, the only option was night shifts.”

The 700kg recreation is based on the prototype Transporter that became the T2a, which was built from 1967 to 1971. It is recognised by many as one of the world’s most iconic campervans.

Measuring five metres long, 1.9 metres wide and two metres high, the LEGO model will be displayed at the fair from February 20 to 24.
