Volkswagen’s new, more efficient TSI petrol engine detailed

Volkswagen has confirmed details of its new, more efficient TSI turbo petrol engine.

Volkswagen has revealed details about its next-generation TSI turbocharged petrol engine line-up, known as the EA211 TSI evo range. The new engines will make their public debut next month at the International Vienna Motor Symposium.

The new engine

The all-new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine can be expected to find its way to current VW models and new entries from the manufacturer in the near future. Not only that, but other brands owned by the German car giant are likely to receive the same engine.

This new engine, available with outputs of 128bhp and 148bhp, will replace the smaller 1.4-litre TSI petrol unit used in numerous current VW group cars.

Improvements made to the new 1.5-litre TSI include reduced internal friction, improved cooling and a wider window to utilise the engine’s boost, with the effects felt from as low as 1,300rpm. The new engine is also said to be 10 per cent more fuel efficient than the 1.4-litre TSI it is replacing and uses one litre less fuel over 62 miles.

Volkswagen also says its new TSI engine is designed to reduce CO2 emissions to the point where it will comply with tighter regulations set to be introduced in 2020.

The Volkswagen Polo and Golf are rumoured to be the first cars that will receive this new 1.5-litre TSI engine.
