Volkswagen set to use ‘GTX’ name for high-performance EVs

The new nameplate will be used for future powerful electric models

Volkswagen is set to utilise ‘GTX’ as the new badge on its upcoming sporty electric models.

According to Autocar, the GTX name is going to be used on Volkswagen’s performance versions of its new range of ‘ID.’ models, with the first use of the nomenclature set to be on the production version of the ID. Crozz – the ID.5 – though this hasn’t been confirmed.

GTX aims to follow a similar path to the current GTI, GTD and GTE models, which each aim to offer additional performance over the regular model. These performance electric models would also likely benefit from styling tweaks and revised interiors, as with other ‘GT’ models.

The use of ‘X’ points towards the fact that these new performance EVs are could be all-wheel-drive – more than likely featuring a twin electric motor setup, with one on each axle.

Autocar also reported that Volkswagen was considering offering an even hotter ‘R’ branch for its electric models.

Volkswagen has been heavily teasing its new ‘ID.’ models for multiple years with a host of concepts, and finally unveiled its ID.3 hatch in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s Volkswagen’s first bespoke EV and is a similar size to VW’s best-selling Golf. It reaches showrooms in 2020, with prices set to start from under £30,000.
