Volkswagen adds more powerful petrol engine to T-Cross crossover line-up

Volkswagen T-Cross gains range-topping 1.5 litre petrol engine

The new 1.5-litre petrol engine sits at the top of the line-up.

Volkswagen has introduced a new range-topping petrol engine to the line-up of its popular T-Cross crossover.

The 148bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine is already widely offered across the Volkswagen Group, but has now been added the T-Cross – becoming the most powerful unit.

It’s mated as standard to a seven-seat DSG automatic transmission and can accelerate from 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 124mph. Volkswagen is also promising it can return up to 44mpg, with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

As a range-topping engine, you’ll find it on the top-spec SEL and R-Line grades, with S and SE versions not being offered with this powertrain.

Both these models come with front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, LED headlights and an eight-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation. The R-Line then gains sportier styling, 18-inch alloy wheels and a digital cockpit.

Claire Haynes, T-Cross product manager at Volkswagen UK, said: “At Volkswagen, we are committed to making sure we live up to our People’s Car name by making a car for everyone. The T-Cross is no different, and those who would like an even more potent engine can now be catered for.

“The T-Cross’s motto is “I am more than one thing”, and the addition of this punchy new engine into the mix only goes to broaden the appeal of the car still further.”

Existing engines in the line-up include a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol unit, available with outputs of 94bhp or 113bhp, as well as an efficient 94bhp 1.6-litre diesel.
