Volkswagen to offer zero-emission car-share service in 2020

The WE project will start in Germany next year, before being rolled out globally in 2020 – allowing people to share the upcoming fleet of electric vehicles.

From next year, Volkswagen will begin offering its I.D. range of zero-emission vehicles as part of the WE car-sharing network, with global rollout happening in 2020.

The WE car-sharing platform is first being deployed in German cities, with the scheme spreading to other major cities in Europe, North America and Asia further down the line, allowing people to use the all-electric vehicles that will be publically released in 2019.

Jürgen Stackmann, Volkswagen board member for sales, said: “We are convinced that the car sharing market still has potential. That is why we are entering this market with a holistic single-source concept covering all mobility needs from the short journey that takes just a few minutes to the long vacation trip.

“Our vehicle-on-demand fleets will consist entirely of electric cars, and will therefore provide zero-emission, sustainable mobility. That is an intelligent way to relieve the strain on urban areas.”

The I.D. range will consist of the I.D. supermini that is due to be released next year, as well as the I.D. BUZZ MPV, the crossover I.D. CROZZ and the potentially autonomous I.D. VIZZION saloon – all of which are due to be released in the next five years.

Phillip Reth, Volkswagen chief executive officer, said: “Our customers expect an environmentally-friendly fleet that takes them to their destination quickly and at a fair price – and that is exactly the experience we will be delivering.”
