Volvo S60 range grows with new plug-in hybrid

The new T8 ‘Twin Engine’ powertrain joins the range alongside two new trim levels.

Volvo has expanded the range of its S60 executive saloon with a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain and new trim levels.

Since the third-generation S60 arrived in showrooms earlier this year, it has exclusively been offered with the T5 powertrain – featuring a 247bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, with the Swedish firm outlining from the start that no diesel engines would be offered.

But buyers now have a new more efficient option – the T8 plug-in hybrid. Used across all of Volvo’s top-end models, such as the V90 and XC90, this PHEV combines a 299bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine together with an electric motor to produce a combined 385bhp. This makes it one of the fastest Volvos on sale today, as it’s able to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds.

An 11.8kWh battery also allows for an electric range up to 36 miles, along with impressively low fuel consumption, as Volvo claims the T8 can return up to 176.5mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 36g/km.

T8 models are priced from £49,805, and are offered exclusively in the sporty-looking R-Design Plus grade. This is a new trim level, which replaces the R-Design Edition trim. Standard equipment includes a head-up display, part-leather sports seats and 18-inch alloy wheels, while T5 models also come with a sportier suspension setup.

The T5 is also now offered with a new Inscription Plus trim level, which acts as the most luxurious model. Features of this version include Nappa leather upholstery, driftwood interior inlays and ventilated front seats.

The S60 T5 costs from £37,935 in R-Design Plus trim, or £38,835 in Inscription Plus form.

The expanded S60 range is available to buy now, while it will be extended even further in the near-future with a Polestar-tuned version of the T8, which develops 400bhp.
