Volvo S90 targets executive saloon market

Details and images have emerged of the all-new Volvo S90 ahead of its public debut at next month’s Detroit Motor Show.

This premium executive saloon will reportedly launch during summer 2016 and will challenge the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF.

A replacement for the outgoing Volvo S80, the new S90 is longer and wider in comparison and features some bold exterior design cues. Of particular note are the large C-shaped rear lights and the ‘Thor’s hammer’ daytime running lights at the front. The latter feature can be found on the latest XC90 SUV.

The Volvo S90 shares other things in common with the latest XC90, including other tech features like a large, portrait-layout infotainment screen which incorporates sat-nav and audio apps. The S90 will also share the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving function, which helps keep the car aligned between motorway road markings at speeds of up to 80mph.

The S90 will also come with Volvo’s City Safety system, but the new saloon will debut an additional function of this safety gadget - large animal detection. The S90’s laser sensor-based system will be able to detect and react to not just other cars, but also large animals on the road – such as horses for instance.

Engines for the Volvo S90 are expected to include options found with the latest XC90, including the D4 and D5 diesel units and the 394bhp T8 ‘Twin Engine’ plug-in hybrid. More details are likely to emerge when the S90 is presented to the public in Detroit next month.
