Volvo unveils new electric XC40’s Android infotainment system

The new system takes advantage of several Google technologies.

Volvo has showcased its new Android-based infotainment system which will feature on the new electric XC40.

Differentiating from features such as Android Auto, which merely mirrors your smartphone, the system fitted to the XC40 is entirely based around Android, and features several in-built Google features.

Highlights include Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play Store, which are fully integrated. Volvo is the first company to team up with Google for the software, which will also be seen on fellow brand Polestar’s models.

Volvo claims the XC40 will be “at the forefront of automotive connected services”, thanks to the operating system being able to receive over the air updates. This means the electric XC40 can continue to adapt throughout its ownership.

Henrik Green, chief technical officer at Volvo Cars, said: “We are finally giving you the same experience in your car that you’re used to on your phone, but adapted for safe interaction while driving.

“And by introducing over-the-air updates for everything from maintenance to completely new features, the car can stay as fresh as your other digital products, always with the latest and greatest features.”
