Volvo V90 adds tougher Cross Country edition

The Volvo V90 is adding a tougher, off-road friendly derivative called the Cross Country and its makers have released first details and images of the car.

The new Volvo V90 estate is adding a beefed-up, off-road capable derivative called the Cross Country. First images and details of the car were recently revealed during an event in Malmo, Sweden and it is expected to come to the UK during the second quarter of 2017.

Compared to the regular V90, the Cross Country has the ride height raised by 65mm, and the wheel and tyre combination has an overall diameter that’s 42mm bigger. The front and rear tracks are also widened and all-wheel drive powertrains are likely to come as standard.

Volvo reportedly tried out 200 different chassis set-ups to figure out how to make the Cross Country more off-road capable than a regular V90 estate. The new Cross Country will come with four driving modes to choose from, including Comfort, Eco, Dynamic and Rough Road.

Virtually all the luxury features found in the regular Volvo V90, including a premium sound system by Bowers and Wilkins, will be carried over to the new Cross Country.

The senior vice president of research and development at Volvo Cars, Dr Peter Mertens, said: “With All-Wheel Drive, increased ride height and a chassis optimised for comfort and control in all weather and road conditions, the new V90 Cross Country takes our versatile V90 estate and adds the heart of an explorer.”

Pricing for the V90 Cross Country will likely start from around £45,000.
