Volvo’s mid-range SUV the XC60 has been named the safest car of 2017 by Euro NCAP, as well as the safest large SUV.

By scoring highly in adult occupancy – a near-perfect 98 per cent – and safety assistance – 95 per cent – the XC60 was ahead of many of its closest rivals.

This is the second Volvo to win both its category and overall safety award, as the XC90 did the same thing back in 2015.

It is also the third car made by the Swedish manufacturer that scored the highest in all three autonomous emergency braking categories

Malin Ekholm, vice president at Volvo Cars Safety Centre, said: “The new XC60 is one of the safest Volvo cars ever made.

“It is fully loaded with new technology designed to assist drivers, to help protect vehicle occupants and other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, plus mitigate collision risks. We are proud that our ongoing commitment to innovating new safety features has been recognised with another Euro NCAP Best in Class award for Volvo Cars.”

In the past Volvo has pledged that no people will die from accidents in its vehicles by 2020, and Ekholm echoed this sentiment following the Euro NCAP award.

Ekholm added: “Our vision is that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car.

“The achievements of the XC60 are examples of our commitment to developing the latest safety and support systems as we strive towards that vision.”
