Ford has announced that cars fitted with the Sync 3 infotainment system can now use the Waze navigation application via the brand’s AppLink system.
Currently, only customers with an iPhone and Apple CarPlay can use Waze on the touchscreen system, but rather than being restricted to a few functions they can access the full application. It is expected that Android phone users will also get the service on Ford Sync systems.
Waze is a crowdsourced application that takes information from the service’s users to update the status of the road network by providing information on accidents, traffic conditions and more efficient routes. It also helps pinpoint where the cheapest fuel stops are.
Users only need to plug their iPhone in via the USB port and they can then use the system on the main display and with the vehicle’s voice control.

Jens Baron, product lead for in-car applications at Waze, said: “We’re excited that drivers of Ford Sync 3-enabled vehicles will now be able to use Waze for Apple phones right from their dashboard, getting access to features like planned drives, alternative routes, talking to Waze voice commands and more.
“They’ll also benefit from the best routes and most accurate ETAs, thanks to our global community of drivers on the go who update the map in real time – helping our mission to one day eliminate traffic congestion.”
