What is the Volkswagen I.D. family?

We take a look at the all-electric group of vehicles Volkswagen is currently developing, with the first expected to go on sale in 2018.

Over the last couple of years, Volkswagen has been teasing and revealing concepts as part of the I.D. family, which will be a series of all-electric vehicles going on sale in the future.

Starting out with the I.D. in 2016, the range of concepts has grown to six – all of which come with the I.D. moniker and will be the start of Volkswagen’s zero-emission full-scale offensive in the affordable vehicle market.

Here, we take a look at all six models to see what they will have to offer and when they are expected to go on sale – if at all.

I.D.

Volkswagen I.D.

Revealed at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the I.D. will be the first model from the electric family and Volkswagen said that by 2020, it will be on sale alongside the Golf. Fitted with a 167bhp powertrain, the I.D. Concept has a range between 248 and 372 miles, and is roughly the same size as the popular hatchback – with Volkswagen also saying it comes with the I.D. Pilot autonomous mode that will be fully implemented by 2025. This is set to be the model that kick starts Volkswagen major EV offensive.

I.D. BUZZ

With a design reminiscent of the original VW Transporter from the 1960s, the BUZZ is an electric van that performs the same role as the classic microbus, but with updated tech and a fresh design. Fitted with up to eight seats, the BUZZ comes with two electric motors to provide four-wheel drive – with an output of 368bhp. Like the I.D., the BUZZ has an autonomous mode, allowing for long-distance family transport in a spacious cabin. VW has said it will be on the way in 2022.

I.D. BUZZ CARGO

Based on the BUZZ, the BUZZ CARGO is a commercial version of the van and comes with a 341-mile range from its electric powertrain. Fitted with sockets for power tools and equipment, the CARGO is likely to be provided as an alternative to the current Transporter and offer commercial users an 800kg payload. Unlike the other I.D. models, it comes with a solar panel for additional range on the move.

I.D. VIZZION

What the VIZZION displays is the future of driverless motoring and the premium saloon comes with no controls and plenty of space for four occupants. For security, the VIZZION comes with biometric scanners to setup the vehicle to different profiles, and the all-electric drive allows for zero-emission cruising in comfort. The vehicle also uses augmented reality and artificial intelligence to help with the media and running of the vehicle – with this car more likely to be on the road by the end of the next decade.

I.D. CROZZ

Based more on the basis of potential autonomous driving, the crossover-inspired CROZZ mixes SUV and coupe styling to accommodate four people. Like the standard I.D., the CROZZ is set to be on sale by 2020 and it will be fitted with 4MOTION all-wheel drive alongside the 301bhp powertrain.

I.D. R Pikes Peak

Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak

More likely to remain away from public sale, the I.D. R has already been breaking records. The all-electric race car was built to tackle the Pikes Peak hill climb this summer and broke the overall record with a run of 7:57.148. The honed racer has a 671bhp powertrain and weighed less than 1,100kg – with the model developed and built in just 250 days. This could be a precursor for an all-electric sports car from Volkswagen, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
