If you want just a hint as to how good Ford’s Fiesta and Focus models are, you only have to look at the sales charts, with both these cars appearing in the top five of the UK’s most popular new cars.
Over the years they’ve built up a very loyal crowd, and the current generations are better than ever – still being great fun to drive, but safer and more upmarket, too.
And for 2020, Ford has updated both with new technology to make sure they remain at the top of the class. Here’s what’s new on the 2020 Ford Fiesta and 2020 Ford Focus…
New mild-hybrid powertrains
Ford debuted its new Puma earlier this year with new mild-hybrid powertrains, which deliver a great mix of performance and efficiency. And these are now being offered on both the Fiesta and Focus.
The mild-hybrid system is available on Ford’s acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine in outputs of either 123bhp or 153bhp, which deliver 24Nm more torque than the engine they replace and are five per cent more efficient. That might not sound a lot, but over time, you’ll certainly see the savings at the pump.
Revised touchscreen system
All Fiesta and Focus models already feature an eight-inch touchscreen, which is very easy to use and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
But as part of this update, Ford has made the system even more intuitive – adding larger buttons and introducing a new user interface that aims to make using it simpler.
Ford is also introducing FordPass Connect features as standard, which allows you to control and check certain features of the car remotely – such as locking the doors and remote start on models with an automatic gearbox.
Additional safety kit on the Fiesta
Small cars have got more and more advanced in recent years, and many now feature the tech you’d expect to find on much larger and more expensive models.
Ford is enhancing the new Fiesta with new safety kit, such as adaptive cruise control, as well as perpendicular park assist and rear cross traffic alert, which is where the car can warn you of any dangers when reversing out of a parking space.
New digital instrument cluster for the Focus
Both the new Puma and new Kuga come with an excellent 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and this is now available on the Focus, too.
It can be configured in many ways, which means you can get it to show the information you want and remove what you don’t want it to show. It also works brilliantly with the mild-hybrid system, too – showing how it works and the energy that you’re saving.
Revised Focus trim line-up
As part of revisions to the Focus, Ford has also introduced a new ‘Zetec Edition’ grade, which builds on the kit that you find on the previous Zetec model. Highlights include a new wireless charging pad, along with satellite navigation and front and rear parking sensors – making it even better value for money than before.
Elsewhere, ST-Line and Active Edition models benefit from additional kit, such as keyless entry, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and automatic wipers.
The updated Fiesta and Focus are both on sale now, with prices starting from £16,640 and £22,210 respectively.
