WhatCar? reveals most reliable motoring brands

Far Eastern brands dominated the top ten, with 23 of the 31 brands listed scoring at least 90 per cent.

WhatCar? has released the findings from its annual Reliability Survey, with Japanese brand Suzuki coming out on top.

The annual questionnaire asked British motorists how reliable their cars were over the last 12 months and with over 18,000 respondents, Suzuki was found to be the best with a reliability rating of 97.7 per cent.

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross

Fellow Japanese brands Lexus and Toyota were second and third, with the pair achieving 97.5 and 96.8 ratings respectively.

Three companies shared fourth place, with Japanese manufacturers Mitsubishi and Subaru joined by South Korea’s Kia on 95.8 per cent. Skoda was the first European brand on the list, scoring 95.6 per cent to place seventh.

The top ten was rounded out by Alfa Romeo (95.5 per cent), Hyundai (95.4 per cent) and Seat (95.2 per cent).

Suzuki was also successful in the individual car category, as the SX4 S-Cross and Toyota’s petrol Yaris received perfect scores from the survey, which states owners had no issues with either of them in the last 12 months.

Toyota Yaris

The Nissan Leaf, Toyota RAV4 and Volvo V60 also scored more than 99 per cent.

Steve Huntingford, editor of WhatCar?, said: “Reliability is a huge consideration for any prospective car buyer, as your car is likely to be your second-biggest monthly expense after mortgage or rent payments. You want your car to last and you don’t want to have to fork out huge amounts to fix faults and keep it running.

“Our annual survey has shown that it is Japanese models that continue to dominate the top of the reliability rankings, both for car model and brand rankings.”
