Why Mazda’s CX-5 is one of the hottest SUVs on the market…

We zone in on the Mazda CX-5 and why it’s a favourite among critics.

With the SUV craze in full-swing, there’s a broad range of impressive options out there — and one of those at the forefront is the Mazda CX-5.

Though newer rivals may be on the block – with the Japanese SUV introduced in 2017 – it has fought off plenty of fierce competition for a great number of reasons, which we’ll dive into now…

Striking looks

Mazda’s latest CX-5 takes on an evolved form of the firm’s ‘Kodo’ corporate design, resulting in a car that stands out within its class as one of the most elegant looking offerings. Up front, slim headlights flank an eye-catching front grille while the rear of the car is treated to simple, yet impactful taillights that complement the vehicle’s look perfectly.

Impressive levels of equipment

Along with a host of other qualities, Mazda vehicles are known for offering a comprehensive level of equipment at an affordable cost — and that’s no different for the CX-5. As standard, its list of kit includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker audio system, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights and rain-sensing front wipers. On top of that, higher-spec models introduce the likes of 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, an electric tailgate and a head-up display.

Efficient range of engines

Taking advantage of a range of diesel Skyactiv-D and petrol Skyactiv-G engines, the CX-5 is one of the most efficient SUVs around. Opt for a manual diesel option, and Mazda says you could see an average fuel consumption of just 49.6mph. Even it its thirstiest automatic petrol guise, it’s still capable of 36.7mpg.

Premium quality

Its cars may not be the most expensive around, but that hasn’t resulted in Mazda sacrificing on quality. Sit inside the cabin of any of its cars — especially the CX-5 — and you’re met with a plethora of soft-touch materials, plenty of space for all occupants and the sense that everything is built to last. Truly premium car manufacturers only just deliver a slightly nicer experience, but at a substantial price increase.

Excellent value for money

As we’ve alluded to throughout here, the Mazda CX-5 is a properly affordable prospect despite its strong equipment list and impressive build quality. Prices start at just £25,600 — more than reasonable for a car of this size and quality — rising up to just £31,100 in top-spec GT Sport Nav+ guise.
