Why the Land Rover Discovery is the UK's favourite off-roader

Now in its fifth generation, there are many reasons to like the Discovery in its current guise.

First introduced back in 1989, the Land Rover Discovery was marketed as a cheaper alternative to the Range Rover that was still as capable on the rough stuff.

With the fifth generation model revealed back in 2017, Land Rover has given customers an improved overall package that is safer and more advanced than ever – making it a hit with British motorists.

Here are some reasons why drivers are so drawn to the model…

Great family option

With seating for up to seven in comfort, the Discovery is impressively spacious. Yes, it is a large SUV, so that is expected, but with five seats in place, you can expect to have 1,137 litres of storage behind the rearmost seats – which is more than enough. There are also a series of pockets and bins throughout the cabin that help get all the necessary kit on-board with room to spare.

Plenty of tech as standard

With the Touch Pro infotainment system at the heart of the centre console, the Discovery provides drivers with an intuitive setup that offers satellite navigation, smartphone integration and views of the Discovery’s cameras. To enjoy your media on the move, the Meridian sound system is also on board, while passengers can stay connected thanks to the car’s Wi-Fi hotspot.

A series of driver aids can also be fitted, with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, front and rear parking aids, and cruise control with speed limiter are all included as standard. Further offerings, such as park assist, rear traffic monitor, blind spot assist and high-speed emergency braking are all available.

Suited to all conditions

Land Rover makes sure all its models can cope well off-road, and with the latest Discovery that is no different. Fitted as standard with the Terrain Response 2 setup, drivers can ensure the engine, gearbox and chassis is all set up correctly for the surface they are going over. Other features such as electronic air suspension, all terrain progress control and wade sensing, mean motorists should be confident they can get to any destination without trouble.

Prices for the Discovery start from £47,405.
