We say The CLK Coupe is a classy, refined coupe, albeit a costly one that isn't quite as good as it should be.Performance There are a lot of different engines available with the CLK. The picks of the bunch are the V6s including the 2.2-litre and 3.0-litre CDI diesels. There are also a couple of V8s which give the CLK very brisk pace. The top speed with faster engines is electronically restricted to 155mph.Emissions The CLK’s performance in this area is disappointing compared to current rivals. The most frugal diesel engines can return 44mpg while emitting 169g/km in CO2. A lot of specifications however record CO2 emissions above 200g/km. The worst offenders, models with the 5.0-litre 500 petrol unit can emit up to 276g/km.Driving Prioritising comfort ahead of sport, the CLK can cruise for long distances with little trouble. The CLK coupe uses the same chassis as the C-Class saloon and a slighter firmer suspension set-up to give extra poise through the bends.Feel The rear-wheel drive steering provides plenty of feedback, but with one of the more powerful engines and a wet road things can get tricky. Each model comes with a six-speed manual gearbox which feels ok but the optional five-speed automatic brings smoother gear changes.Space This four-seater coupe is very spacious at the front. At the back however tall passengers may wish for more headroom. Although the car is a two-door model, getting in the back isn’t too difficult. The boot is a decent size with 381 litres of capacity, similar to a Ford Focus hatchback.Equipment Just three trims exist for the CLK Coupe, as standard you get alloy wheels, climate control and cruise control. Some features like leather seat trim and folding rear seats are only optional on all specifications.Price The pricing range when new varies from £28,375 to £49,240.Quality The build is disappointing, with issues reported regarding the seats and cabin trim coming loose. Engines aren’t that intrusive noise-wise but there are also reports of rattles and electrical faults inside.Safety Six airbags and electronic stability are provided standard. Rear side airbags can be included optional as well. This car doesn’t have a Euro NCAP rating but there should be no real concerns about the CLK in terms of safety.Pros Stylish looks, large engine range, efficient diesel units, comfortable to drive over long distances.Cons A lot of used examples are expensive and have reliability issues, cabin can become faulty, and rear seating is cramped.Alternatives Audi A5 Coupe, BMW 3 Series Coupe
