Ford Focus C-Max

The Ford Focus C-Max is a good compromise between driveability and space requirements which are apparent in this Focus-based MPV.

We say

Good compromise between driveability and space requirements in this Focus-based MPV.

Performance

All the C-MAX’s engines are up to scratch. The diesels will offer economy and pulling power. The petrols are refined.

Emissions

The 1.6-litre TDCi is frugal – returning almost 6-0mpg and emitting under 130g/km. No C-MAX engines are particularly costly, though the 2.0 petrol with auto box is one to avoid if running costs are an issue.

Driving

Handling and ride are superb for quite a large vehicle, with plenty of grip, responsive steering and a comfortable ride around town. The C-MAX has a tad more body roll than the Focus, though, on which it is based.

Feel

A quiet cabin in the C-MAX due to good insulation makes for good cruising, as does a supple suspension set-up

Space

Loads of space and practicality in the C-MAX, though there’s no seven-seat option. Space for five and rear seats fold or lift out completely. Boot space is well ahead of the sector’s average at 550 litres.

Equipment

Entry-level trim has power steering and electric front windows but you will have to hunt the specs for more – or option them at cost.

Price

Running costs in the C-MAX are middling, unless you choose a diesel, while residuals should be middling.

Quality

The interior looks solid, if uninspired. Mechanicals and engines in the C-MAX should be strong.

Safety

ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution are standard, as are twin front and side airbags and curtain airbags. ESP an option – Euro NCAP safety testing only yielded four stars out of five for the Focus C-MAX.

Pros

Good drive, space and practicality.

Cons

Won’t drive as well as a hatch; not as practical as larger MPVs

Alternatives
