We say Falls between several stools and may slip through the cracks, but the FR-V a good car.Performance Two petrols at 1.7- and 2.0-litres were initially available, both replaced by a more economical 1.8 i-VTEC petrol that sprints to 62mph in 10.3 seconds. There’s also a 138bhp 2.2-litre turbodiesel to choose from that can sprint to 62mph in under ten seconds. The FR-V’s dashboard-mounted gearstick is standard on most models but there’s also an autobox with the 1.8-litre petrol.Emissions The 1.8 petrol can return 37mpg and emit 177g/km, while the diesel performs better at 44mpg and 167g/km respectively. Middling running costs at best in the FR-V.Driving Wide stance ratchets up handling and a low centre of gravity means there’s not too much body roll, while there’s plenty of grip into corners. Steering is good and the ride is supple.Feel The 1.7-litre petrol is a little noisy when pushed, but the engines are generally quiet. The FR-V’s relatively soft suspension makes for a good cruiser.Space The Honda FR-V features an odd 3+3 seating layout, meaning it can seat six in comfort. What’s more the seats fold in such a way as to create what amount to beds. The Honda MPV’s rear seats slide independently and fold flat to increase practicality and storage space – there’s a minimum of 439 litres of boot space, but that extends enormously.Equipment Aircon, CD player, central locking and electric windows as standard on the FR-V. Alloys, cruise control and leather at higher specs.Price The FR-V undercuts rivals and offers plenty of kit. The 2.2 diesel is the best bet for running costs.Quality The FR-V’s interior is superb and Honda rates very highly for reliability and engines.Safety Six bags as standard, ABD, traction and and stability control on higher models. The FR-V didn’t achieve the maximum five stars for Euro NCAP crash testing, managing only four.Pros Good engines, clever seating, competitive price.Cons Seating can be awkward, small choice of engines.Alternatives Volkswagen Touran, Mazda5, Vauxhall Zafira, Ford S-MAX
