Buyer’s guide to the 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer

Here’s what you need to know about this stylish MPV

BMW’s range of cars is one of the most extensive, and alongside the popular saloons and SUVs, the firm also offers an MPV – the 2 Series Active Tourer.

It’s proven a very popular model for BMW since its launch, and so much so that it’s now back for a second generation. Packing a more stylish design and all of the firm’s latest technology, it remains a smart, practical and roomy option for those wanting more versatility than a standard hatchback.

Here’s everything you need to know about it before buying…

What engines are available?

At launch the 2 Series Active Tourer is offered with a pair of petrol engines and a diesel, though plug-in hybrid powertrains will launch later in the year. All versions feature a seven-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox too.

Kicking off the petrol range, which comes with mild-hybrid technology as standard, is the 220i. Using a 168bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine, it’s able to reach 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds, while returning up to a claimed 47.9mpg. If you want a bit more zip, the 223i gets a larger 215bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine that drops the 0-60mph time to 6.8 seconds, though is similarly efficient.

Drivers doing plenty of miles may still be tempted by the 218d – a 148bhp 2.0-litre engine that’s able to take the 2 Series to 60mph in 8.6 seconds, while BMW says it could return up to 59mpg.

If you’d rather wait for a plug-in hybrid, the 225e xDrive and 230e xDrive are due to arrive in summer. Both come with all-wheel-drive and a 1.5-litre engine, with combined power being 242bhp on the 225 and an impressive 322bhp on the 230e. They’re also said to be able to travel for up to 49 miles on electricity, providing scope for some impressively low running costs.

What trim levels are offered?

BMW offers three trim levels on the 2 Series Active Tourer – Sport, Luxury and M Sport. Equipment highlights and pricing are as follows.

Sport – from £30,265

All versions come with plenty of standard equipment, including 17-inch alloy wheels, an electric boot, climate control, sliding rear seats and a front armrest. You also get LED headlights, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and 10.7-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, in-built Wi-Fi and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Luxury – from £32,085

The Luxury model is focused around finer details, and comes with leather upholstery as standard, along with aluminium roof rails and additional chrome exterior styling. You get revised 17-inch alloy wheels too, along with heated front seats.

M Sport – from £33,940

M Sport versions receive more aggressive styling, achieved through a racier bodykit, gloss black detailing and larger 18-inch alloy wheels. It also features Alcantara and Sensatec upholstery with blue contrast stitching, keyless entry and sports suspension.

What about personalisation?

BMW offers customers plenty of choice on the 2 Series Active Tourer, as alongside three different trims – which each offer a different look – there’s a good range of colours available, including Portimao Blue and Sanremo Green. The alloy wheels can be upgraded to 19 inches too.

Three leather colours are available too (cream, brown and black), while there’s a vast number of optional extras on offer. We’d be tempted by the £1,050 Comfort Pack, which brings electric front seats and a heated steering wheel. Individual optional extras include a tow bar (£795), panoramic glass sunroof (£1,000) and Harman/Kardon sound system (£600).
