Buyer’s Guide to the Audi A1

With the new A1 on its way to showrooms, we take at what Audi’s smallest model has to offer.

Following its unveiling in 2010, the Audi A1 became one of the top supermini options on the market – and now the German brand has revealed the second generation.

As the smallest offering from Audi, the A1 goes up against the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Mini Hatch and VW Polo, and it comes with the latest features the company has to offer.

We take a brief look at the 2019 A1…

What engines are available?

All engines for the new A1 will be petrol and come with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic transmission. From launch, customers will be able to select the 1.0-litre 30 TFSI that develops 114bhp, while the 1.5-litre 35 TFSI that produces 148bhp and the 197bhp 2.0-litre 40 TFSI will be on offer from February and March 2019 respectively. The 40 TFSI will only be available with the seven-speed auto.

With the launch-spec engine, the A1 will be able to get from 0-60mph in 9.2 seconds with the automatic transmission – just 0.1 seconds slower for the manual alternative – and reach a top speed of 126mph. The fuel economy is impressive for a petrol engine, with Audi quoting returns of 58.9mpg and emissions of 108g/km CO2.

What specifications can you choose from?

Customers will have the choice of three trim levels – SE, Sport and S line – and all come with decent equipment as standard. From the base SE trim, the A1 comes with LED head and rear lights with dynamic indicators, 15-inch alloy wheels, matte black exterior trim, dynamic suspension, the 10.25-inch digital instrument screen, an 8.8-inch infotainment display, 60/40 split rear seats and Audi Pre-Sense front.

Models also come with lane departure warning, speed limiter and hill-hold assist, as well as automatic start/stop and electric windows. The Sport and S line also come with cruise control, rear parking sensors, sport suspension and sport seats, as well as larger alloy wheels and aluminium detailing.

What customisation is there?

With the A1 being released under the grips of WLTP, there are only a few packs and options available. The two pack options are the £1,650 Technology Pack and the £995 Comfort and Sound Pack – with the former providing the 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument display and the latter adding the parking plus system with sensors and visual aids. Audi also offers a series of body, alloy and interior trim options to customise your model even further.

How much does the A1 cost?
