Buyer’s Guide to the BMW X5

We take a look at BMW’s large SUV, which features many high-end features and quality engines to peak your interest.

As the first model to appear in BMW’s X line-up, the X5 has been a stalwart of the German brand’s line-up since 1999.

Although its flagship SUV status has been moved on to the X7, the X5 is still a yard stick for quality SUVs – with the latest generation proving that.

We take a look at the 2018 BMW X5…

What power units are on offer?

BMW provides customers with four powertrain options, including an iPerformance petrol hybrid. The four conventional setups are offered as a single petrol and two diesel units – all of which are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive four-wheel drive as standard.

The petrol on offer is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit developing 335bhp, while both diesels are derived from a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine – developing 394bhp in the top-end M50d and 261bhp for the 30d. For the 45e iPerformance model, BMW pairs a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with the latest in BMW’s eDrive technology which develops 389bhp and allows for 49 miles of zero-emission driving.

What’s the spec like?

The latest X5 is offered with three specifications – xLine, M Sport and M50d – and all of which come well-appointed with quality equipment. On xLine models, you will find 19-inch alloy wheels, chrome detailing, air suspension, the Live Cockpit and Connected Package Professional infotainment setup, LED head and brake lights, Bluetooth with wireless charging pad, front sports seats with heating, an automatic tailgate and leather upholstery.

The M Sport model adds multiple M-specific features, such as 20-inch alloys, body kit, steering wheel, braking system and badging – with run-flat tyres and BMW Individual features also added.

Is there a lot of customisation?

Through BMW’s Individual programme, customers can choose almost any colour to have on their X5, as well as one of a selection of interior trim options. Prospective customers can also choose to fit a series of optional packages, including the Comfort and Comfort Plus, M Sport Plus, Visibility and Technology packs. All of these can considerably enhance the equipment already on offer in the X5 – although all of these packs cost in excess of £1,500 each.
