Buyer’s guide to the Jeep Renegade

Here’s what you need to know about Jeep’s smallest Renegade crossover.

To ensure Jeep continues to remain relevant in a modern world, it’s had to move into new markets.

One of these is the booming compact crossover market, which is one of the most competitive around. However, Jeep stands out here with its genuinely rugged Renegade, which offers supreme off-road ability, depending on version, and chunky styling.

So if you’re looking to stand out from the crowd, the Renegade is a worthy choice. Here’s what you need to know about it…

What engines are available?

Jeep offers an extensive range of engines on it Renegade, with plenty of choice of both petrol and diesel engines.

The petrol line-up kicks off with a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 118bhp, which is paired to a six-speed manual transmission. Next up is a 148bhp 1.3-litre petrol engine that’s paired to a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Each of these engines are front-wheel-drive.

Those who prefer a diesel engine can pick between a 118bhp 1.6-litre unit or a larger 2.0-litre unit, which is available with outputs of either 138bhp or 168bhp, though the latter is only offered on the range-topping Trailhawk engine. The smaller 1.6-litre unit sends power to the front wheels via either a manual or automatic transmission, though the larger engine comes with four-wheel-drive as standard – something that’s rarely seen in the compact crossover segment.

A plug-in hybrid version of the Renegade is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2020.

If you choose the Trailhawk you can have the model in matt green from the factory, too. On the interior, you’re also able to choose between black or white leather seats, depending on version.
