Japanese brand Infiniti has unveiled the first image of the next-generation QX50.

This will be the second version of the premium mid-size crossover, which includes a world-first engine configuration that changes the compression ratio depending on which mode you want to be in.

That means when the driver wants to save fuel the compression ratio increases, and when they need more power and torque it decreases – something that hasn’t been done before.

The 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine produces 264bhp and 380Nm of torque – but this is smaller than the V6 petrol engine fitted to the first version of the QX50. That does mean that fuel consumption is reduced by up to 35 per cent.

It can get from 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds in all-wheel drive guise and go on to a top speed of 143mph.

That engine is paired to a CVT transmission that directs all the power to the front wheels, as the QX50 is built on a new platform to offer more interior space and rigidity.

With an altered exterior that keeps design cues from the previous version, the QX50 is a streamlined crossover with handsome looks.

Christian Meunier, Infiniti’s global division vice president, said: “The QX50 is the most important vehicle we have ever launched, and it embodies everything the brand stands for: Beautiful design, advanced technology and empowering performance.

“As a premium, mid-size SUV, it’s the right vehicle at the right time in one of the world’s fastest growing segments.”

The vehicle will be publically unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show next week.
