2018 Kia Sportage revealed with mild hybrid diesel engine

With a revised interior and exterior design, the main change is the new EcoDynamics+ power setup that utilises a 2.0-litre diesel engine.

Kia has revealed an updated version of its Sportage SUV, with the refreshed model now including a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain and a revised design.

The new EcoDynamics+ setup uses a 2.0-litre diesel engine alongside a 48V electrical system, and that makes Kia the first brand to offer hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and mild-hybrid drivetrains across its line-up.

This is the first of the brand’s 16 ‘advanced powertrain’ vehicles to be released by 2025, and the powertrain’s purpose is to reduce overall emissions and help with fuel economy.

The 48V battery supplements acceleration and with the mild-hybrid starter-generator unit, engine-off time can be extended – meaning less fuel will be used and less emissions would be produced.

Kia also offers a 1.6-litre diesel engine that comes in 113bhp and 134bhp guises, with the higher-powered option available with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed double-clutch automatic transmission.

The Sportage has also had a redesign to the front and rear bumpers, lights and alloy wheel selection – with new designs coming in 16-, 17- and 19-inch sizes.

The cabin also comes with new features, such as a new steering wheel and instrument cluster, as well as two-tone upholstery and the choice of either a seven-inch touchscreen or an eight-inch ‘frameless’ infotainment system.

For added security on the road, Kia has also added smart cruise control with Stop&Go, an around view monitor for easier parking and driver attention warning.

Prices and full specification details will be released in due course, with the new Sportage set to go on sale in the third quarter of 2018.
