2019 Aston Martin RapidE: First look at Aston’s first-ever all-electric car

Aston Martin has announced that its first-ever all-electric car will enter production in 2019, with a limited run of 155 models due to be built.

Aston Martin has confirmed that the RapidE, the first ever all-electric vehicle in its 104-year history, will enter production in 2019.

Essentially an electric version of the Rapide AMR supersaloon, the RapidE has been developed in conjunction with Williams Advanced Engineering and is set for a limited production run of 155 cars.

While the Rapide is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine, the RapidE will instead be powered by an as-yet unknown electric powertrain, but Aston claims that it will match its petrol sibling in terms of pace.

Aston Martin’s president and CEO, Dr Andy Palmer, said: “RapidE represents a sustainable future in which Aston Martin’s values of seductive style and supreme performance don’t merely co-exist alongside a new zero-emission powertrain, but are enhanced by it.

“RapidE will showcase Aston Martin’s vision, desire and capability to successfully embrace radical change, delivering a new breed of car that stays true to our ethos and delights our customers.”

The Gaydon-based sports car manufacturer says that the instant torque characteristics of electric cars means that the RapidE will offer a “unique driving experience” previously unseen in an Aston Martin.

Exact details of what’s going on underneath the RapidE’s skin are still being kept tight to the chest, but Aston has in the past hinted at the idea of fitting a car with four individual electric motors, one for each wheel.

Not only would that allow for absurd power outputs, it would also allow for proper torque vectoring in order to make the car incredibly agile both on the road and on the track.

In any case, we'll find out more about the car's specifics and power output closer to when the RapidE launches in two years' time.
