Audi has pulled the covers off its new A5, which has been unveiled alongside the hotter S5 variants.
Following on from the second-generation A5, which debuted in 2016, the facelifted A5 benefits from many of the changes received by the facelifted A4, which debuted earlier this year.
These include a wider Singleframe grille, slits separating the bumper and bonnet (a hark back to the 1984 Audi Sport quattro. New trapezoid-shaped exhaust tips and revised side sills also feature, while the LED lights are also new.
But on a day-to-day basis, the difference most buyers will notice is the new 10.1-inch touchscreen, which replaces the previous central rotary dial. The system also now comes as standard with an in-built Wi-Fi hotspot, along with more connected services – such as live traffic information.
A key addition to the new A5 is the introduction of mild-hybrid technology – something that has been widely rolled out across Audi’s range recently. Four engines at launch feature this tech, which aims to recuperate energy when the model is decelerating to reduce fuel consumption as part of a 12-volt system.
On the new Audi S5 models, which see a torquey 342bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine replace the old V6 petrol unit, the system is upgraded to a 48-volt system, as is the case on the new Audi S4.
As before, the A5 and S5 will be available in two-door Coupe and Cabriolet form, along with a more practical five-door Sportback version, which is a more stylish alternative to the A4.
Prices are expected to start from around £36,500 when order books open later in autumn, with first A5 deliveries expected at the start of 2020.
