It’s already one of the most impressively equipped, spacious and comfortable cars in its class, though the next-generation model – due in 2021 – is set to be rather different.

New plug-in hybrid powertrain
With Hyundai already offering one of the most extensive range of electrified models on sale of any manufacturer, it’s not surprising that Hyundai is likely to offer the next Tucson with more of these powertrains. You can already get mild-hybrid versions of all the diesel engines in the current car, with an expected plug-in hybrid set to be on the way.
This could mean using the same setup as the IONIQ plug-in hybrid, though a more powerful version that could be used in a seven-seater is likely.
Overhauled exterior
The Hyundai Tucson has always been a fine-looking car, but one that’s never been particularly exciting. However, that’s set to change in 2021, with prototype models showcasing a far more dramatic and intricate front grille that’s more closely aligned to the flagship Santa Fe SUV and hydrogen Nexo.
A powerful N model could be on the way
There have been numerous rumours that Hyundai’s N division would produce a Tucson N, but as the time runs out on the current model, it looks as if we could be waiting until the next generation in 2021 before seeing a hot version.
Vision T concept previews new model
Hyundai showcased a concept that’s likely to heavily influence the new Tucson at the 2019 LA Motor Show – the Vision T.
The concept already shares key styling cues with the prototypes that have been spied testing – the large front grille and full-length rear LED light bar, for example.
This concept is also a plug-in hybrid (though no powertrain details were confirmed), which provides a solid indicator to the fact that the 2021 Tucson will indeed be offered as a PHEV.
