5 Amazing Safety Features of the Volvo S60

Volvo is one of the motoring world’s leaders in vehicle safety and the S60 offers the latest features.

As the most recently revealed offering from Volvo, the S60 saloon is set to become a credible rival to the German monopoly that currently controls the executive car market.

The stylish model will come with Volvo’s latest equipment, including many of the safety features that the Swedish brand has become famous for developing.

Here are some of the major safety equipment offerings that will feature on the 2019 S60…

Pilot Assist

As an add-on to adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist is a semi-autonomous system that provides steering support to keep the car in the right lane while also retaining the correct distance to the vehicle in front by monitoring the vehicle’s speed. Drivers can use this at speeds up to 80mph to help reduce fatigue while on the move, and it can be deployed in stop/start traffic. Drivers must keep a hand on the steering wheel, otherwise the system will switch off, as the driver must stay in control. It can also steer the car through corners, as the vehicle comes with sensors to recognise lane markings around corners.

City Safety

To help with braking or steering to avoid something suddenly, the City Safety system can detect pedestrians, cyclists and large animals at day or night. It will give the driver audible, visual and brake pulse warnings when required at speeds between 31mph and 62mph. The system will turn the vehicle away from the object if an impact is likely and then apply the brakes as much as possible to reduce the likelihood of any accident occurring.

BLIS and Cross Traffic Alert

The blind spot information and cross traffic alert systems combine to provide drivers with assistance in seeing vehicles that are difficult to spot and offer assurance while reversing out of spaces. The blind spot information system alerts drivers by showing a light in the wing mirrors, while sensors mounted in the rear detect vehicles as much as 30 metres away. The cross traffic alert can detect pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists either side of the rear end and provides warnings by showing them on the central Sensus display and through noise alerts.

Run-off road Mitigation

To ensure that you stay on the tarmac and don’t leave the road accidentally, the S60 comes with run-off road mitigation that steers your car back in between the lines if you start to drift onto the verge at the side. It will apply the brakes and provide steering support at speeds of up to 86mph to ensure you don’t have an incident off the road.

Oncoming Lane Mitigation

With the help of steering assistance, the S60 can detect if it is starting to drift into oncoming traffic and automatically steer the vehicle back into the correct lane. It also then warns the driver that they are drifting so they can remain alert. It’s used at speeds between 42mph and 86mph.
