5 things you didn’t know about the Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford’s first EV has been getting plenty of attention, but this is what you might not know

Ford’s first bespoke EV has been a long time coming, but with the Mustang Mach-E now available in showrooms, the wait is over.

And though the brand could have played the new model safe, Ford has gone bold, with the Mach-E’s muscle car-inspired styling already earning it plenty of attention. But though it might be attracting plenty of attention, there’s also quite a lot you probably don’t know about the Mustang Mach-E. Let’s delve deeper beneath the surface…

It actually has a longer range than the equivalent Tesla

Teslas are still considered as the benchmark EVs in their respective classes, but other manufacturers are quite quickly catching up, and – to an extent – actually overtaking this American EV giant.

So it might come as a surprise to learn that the Ford Mustang Mach-E actually has a longer electric range than the equivalent Tesla Model 3. That’s the case with the Long Range rear-wheel-drive version, which is capable of a claimed 379 miles from a single charge. Even the ‘Long Range’ version of the Tesla Model 3 can’t manage that many, with its claimed 360-mile range.

Sporty GT model is the fastest five-seater Ford has ever made

But if you’re less concerned about range and more focused on performance then Ford won’t disappoint you, as the Mustang Mach-E is also available in a sporty GT flavour.

With its twin electric motor setup developing 480bhp and 860Nm of torque, it means this electric SUV is able to go from 0-60mph in as little as 3.5 seconds. That makes it Ford’s fastest accelerating five-seat car ever, which says something when you consider all the brand’s sporty ST and RS models over the years. The GT also gains a special adaptive suspension setup to allow for a sportier drive and specially-developed Recaro brakes to name just a few revisions.

It holds the EV record from John O’Groats to Land’s End

If you’re not quite convinced by the Mustang Mach-E’s long range, you might be interested to learn that this electric SUV actually holds a record for efficiency from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

Earlier this year a team in a Mach-E managed to achieve a record of 6.54 miles per kWh, which equates to an electric range of more than 500 miles from a full charge. In fact, throughout the 840-mile trip, the car only actually had to stop for 45 minutes to charge, which is seriously impressive.

It uses the largest touchscreen ever fitted to a Ford car

The Mustang Mach-E is serving as a technology showcase for Ford, and you only have to see this when you look inside. Equipped with a 15.5-inch Tesla-like touchscreen, it’s by far the largest system ever fitted to one of the brand’s models, and uses the firm’s latest ‘Sync’ technology to allow for over-the-air updates, which means it will continue to get more features.

It also introduces wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and aims to quickly learn your preferences and activities and journeys you do on a day-to-day basis.

You don’t actually have any door handles

One of the niftiest features on the Mustang Mach-E is the fact it does away with any conventional door handles, and instead just has a simple button on the B-pillar that

As part of this, drivers can also use their smartphone as a key, with the car able to detect the device as you approach, before unlocking the car and popping open a door to let you get in. However, if your smartphone runs out of battery or won’t connect for whatever reason, fear not as there’s a back-up option to enter a pin code into the door panel to still be able to access the car.
