A car for 5 to 10 year olds is being made

An all-new car designed to give children aged five to ten years old their first driving experience is being developed, and the makers behind it are looking for test drivers.

The training car is being worked on by a company called Young Drivers Motor Cars Limited, a division of Young Driver, which is Britain’s largest provider of pre-17 driving lessons. The company’s new car is being manufactured exclusively in Britain and has been nine months in development.

Fully-electric

An early sketch plus other details released about Young Drivers’ car indicate it will be a roofless two-seater model driven by twin electric motors, allowing a top speed of 10mph. It will also feature disc brakes, independent suspension and the option of right or left hand steering.

It’ll also have onboard sensors to detect obstacles and stop the car when an imminent collision is detected. It will even come with a remote control meant for parents that can stop the car at any time if it becomes necessary.

Reveal and launch dates confirmed

The director of Young Driver, Kim Stanton, said: “This is not a toy, it is very definitely a small car! We’ve had children involved throughout its development, working with the designers and engineers to ensure that it provides a realistic driving experience.”

Young Driver will present its new car at this year’s Gadget Show Live, which runs between March 31st and April 3rd at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

The car for five to ten year olds will then officially launch in May 2016, when it will be available to use at selected Young Driver venues across the UK.
