All-new Hyundai Ioniq to rival hybrids and EVs

Hyundai has revealed a new family car called the Ioniq which will offer both hybrid and fully-electric powertrains.

Hyundai has revealed the Ioniq which is the first car to offer three types of powertrain including hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric.

With this unique variation in powertrains, the Hyundai Ioniq will be able to rival a vast number of low CO2 family cars including the Toyota Prius, BMW i3 and Vauxhall Ampera.

Engines and gearbox

From its initial launch, the Hyundai Ioniq will be available with the hybrid powertrain, which combines a 103bhp 1.6-litre Kappa GDi petrol engine with a lithium-ion battery powered electric motor bringing an additional 43bhp.

The Ioniq in hybrid form uses front-wheel drive and a six-speed DCT dual clutch gearbox. The petrol engine for this hybrid is used to charge the onboard battery.

Details of the Ioniq’s other powertrains have yet to be revealed, although it’s reported that the fully-electric powertrain will rely purely on a motor charged by a lithium-ion pack.

Ioniq interior

For the cabin of the Ioniq, Hyundai has gone for a minimalist approach with only a small number of switches and a digital touchscreen display.

The cabin is also said to feature eco-friendly materials which appear to include soft-touch plastics and leather contrasted with stitching and chrome-coloured trim.

The Hyundai Ioniq will reportedly begin arriving to markets later this year.
