All-new Mercedes-Benz GLA crossover revealed

The new A-Class-based crossover is more spacious than the model it replaces.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the second-generation version of the GLA – the brand’s smallest crossover.

Based on the A-Class that was unveiled in 2018, the new GLA sits 10mm higher than the model it replaces, and offers “considerably more” space in the back, too, despite being marginally shorter. Chunkier-looking LED rear lights and revised exhaust trim help to separate it from the A-Class, too.

Plastic cladding gives it that rugged SUV look, while the shorter overhangs aim to add to this chunky image. It also continues to be available with 4Matic all-wheel-drive – versions that have this as standard also get the ‘Off-Road Engineering Package’, which adds LED headlights with a specific off-road function, as well as hill descent control.

Mercedes-Benz has also advanced the GLA’s safety technology – including an autonomous emergency braking system that can swerve to avoid incidents, rather than just brake.

As with the latest A-Class, the new GLA features Mercedes-Benz’ latest MBUX infotainment system, which adds advanced voice control functions as well as an augmented reality satellite navigation. Two 10.25-inch displays will be fitted to the top-spec models, while less expensive versions feature two seven-inch screens.

Mercedes-Benz has only announced two petrol versions so far – the GLA 200 and the hot GLA 35 AMG model. The former’s 1.3-litre petrol engine produces 161bhp, while the ‘35’ model’s 2.0-litre unit can serve up 302bhp, while managing 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds.

Further petrol and diesel engines will likely join the line-up and will be lifted from the A-Class, while an even more powerful AMG version is also set to be offered. A plug-in hybrid model is in the pipeline, too.

It goes on sale in spring 2020, with prices expected to jump from the outgoing model’s £25,500 starting price. Thanks to its global appeal, it’s expected to become Mercedes-Benz’ second best-selling model.
