All you need to know about the BMW X3

We take a closer look at the mid-size SUV from BMW, which following its refresh, it continues to be a top level model.

This year marks the introduction of the third generation X3, and since its introduction to the BMW line-up back in 2003 the X3 has been one of the German brand’s more popular models.

In its newest form, the SUV will be employing the latest technology from the company’s 5 Series range, as well as utilising new engines and an altered design.

But if you’re in the market for a mid-size SUV, why should you be looking at the BMW X3?

Great engines on offer

To make sure customers can find the powertrain that’s right for them, BMW offers potential buyers in the UK four engine options with the X3 – two petrol and two diesel. All of the units are paired to the xDrive all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic transmission – which will offer a smooth and assured driving experience for all. The top spec engine on offer is the M40i, which is a 3.0-litre petrol engine producing 355bhp and 500Nm of torque – and is capable of launching the X3 from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph.

Lots of safety equipment

To make the X3 as attractive to drivers as possible, BMW fits it with variable sport steering, dynamic stability control, steering and lane control assistant, LED headlights with cornering lights and dynamic safety – which prepares the car for an accident before impact. Vehicles can also come with parking assistant and cruise control with braking function.

Advanced media technology

As with the current-generation 5 Series, BMW was able to give the X3 gesture controls for the iDrive infotainment system and a full colour head-up display to ensure the driver stays informed at all times. Cars can also be fitted with a Harmon Kardon surround sound system, enhanced Bluetooth with wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a BMW display key that allows drivers to check the status of the vehicle.

Plenty of great options

SUVs are great for going on adventures, so with some of BMW’s additional equipment you can make the X3 perfect for exploring and holidaying. Roof bars can be fitted to accommodate a roof box, while a rear bike carrier can be fitted as well. The BMW Individual programme also allows people who want to make their vehicle more special to add exclusive options and trimmings.

An electric version is on its way

Being built from 2020, the iX3 will be combine the practicality of the X3 with an all-electric powertrain. Designed with the future in mind, the iX3 will come with over 250 miles of range and will offer the same practicality of the standard model.

Prices are competitive compared to rivals

In the crowded premium SUV market, the X3 holds its own and starts from £39,120. Although that may be more than the Mercedes GLC, it is less than the Audi Q5, and on many counts the X3 is a better car. If you’re after a quality mid-size SUV, the X3 is well worth looking at.
