Aston Martin displays production Rapide E for first time

The all-electric model from the British firm will only be built 155 times and comes with two rear-mounted motors developing 602bhp.

Aston Martin has revealed the production version of the much-touted Rapide E – an all-electric grand tourer.

The brand’s first EV, which is set to be James Bond’s car of choice in the next edition of the world-famous film series, comes with an 800Vbattery system paired to two rear-mounted motors – together developing 602bhp and 950Nm of torque.

With that setup, Aston Martin says the Rapide E can go from 0-60mph in less than four seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph.

Limited to just 155 units, the Rapide E has a claimed range of more than 200 miles and with the high capacity battery setup allowing for more efficient charging than most other EVs, Aston Martin says that it can be fully replenished at a fast charger in under an hour. Charging from a conventional plug will take just three hours.

This is the first model to be built at the firm’s new St Athan plant in south Wales, where Aston Martin’s first SUV will also be manufactured.

To make it feel as much like the standard Rapide to drive, Aston Martin offers three driving modes to affect the handling and powertrain, while a limited slip differential is also fitted.

Aston Martin Group chief executive officer and president, Andy Palmer, said: “Unveiling the Rapide E will be a huge moment for Aston Martin. As our first all-electric production car, it is a truly historic step.

“One that signals Aston Martin is prepared for the huge challenge of an environmentally responsible and sustainable future. As a car company we cannot afford to passively allow that future to come to us; we have to actively chase it.

“Only by doing this can we learn and prepare, but also preserve those things we love as drivers and car enthusiasts. That’s why it was so important to me that in embracing EV technology we should not let go of those unique qualities that define an Aston Martin. I believe Rapide E embodies that desire and paves the way for a hugely exciting future.”

Although pricing is only available on enquiry, the limited-run EV is expected to cost around £250,000, with deliveries beginning in due course.
