Audi A6 range expanded with new plug-in hybrid

The new electrified option rivals models such as the BMW 530e and Mercedes-Benz E300e.

Audi has introduced a new plug-in hybrid version into its A6 range, which will likely be a popular addition to this fleet favourite.

PHEVs are usually very popular with company car drivers – as shown by the A6’s key rivals from BMW and Mercedes – and this is Audi’s new effort. Badged as the ’55 TFSI e’, this A6 combines a 249bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined 362bhp and 500Nm of torque. A 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds is possible, along with a top speed limited to 155mph.

It’s paired to a 14.1kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which allows for an electric range of 33 miles. The electrification helps increase claimed fuel consumption to an impressive 148.7mpg, along with CO2 emissions of just 47g/km – this latter figure being key to reducing company car tax. Audi says the battery can be topped up in two and a half hours using a 7.4kW socket.

With it being a quattro, it also features all-wheel-drive, with a seven-speed automatic gearbox delivering this power. A series of EV-specific models can also be used to help control how you use the electric – either all in one go or in combination with the petrol engine.

The new A6 55 TFSI e features the same powertrain as you’ll find in plug-in hybrid versions of the A7 Sportback and Q5 SUV – the latter already being on sale.

Audi hasn’t announced any UK prices and specifications yet, though expect the plug-in hybrid A6 to offered in S line, Black Edition and Vorsprung trim levels. It will likely be the most expensive variant in the regular A6 range, with prices expected to start from around £60,000.
