Audi has pulled the covers off its new Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback – two new electric SUVs that join the firm’s growing range of battery-powered models.
The pair of new models are the first Audi models to sit on the Volkswagen Group’s new MEB platform, which is designed specifically for electric cars, and have been previewed by a range of concepts and teasers over the past few years.
Available as a more conventional SUV bodystyle or a sleeker ‘coupe’-like Sportback version, the Q4 e-tron is available with a choice of 52kWh or 77kWh battery options and three electric electric motor motor options. These include 168bhp and 201bhp options, which are both rear wheel-drive, while a range-topping Quattro model adds a second electric motor on the front axle, taking the power up to 295bhp. In terms of range, models can travel from 208 miles up to a claimed 316 miles, depending on version.
Models with the largest battery can charge at up to 125kW, which Audi says will allow for 80 miles of charge to be added in as little as 10 minutes using a compatible charger, or 38 minutes for a charge from five to 80 per cent of the battery’s capacity.
The Q4’s design is headed up by a blanked off grille, large alloy wheels and a short front overhang. A special focus on aerodynamics reduces drag and enhances efficiency, too – more so on the Sportback version, which can travel roughly seven miles further than the standard car due to its rakish shape. New Matrix LED lighting can also be configured, with various different lighting signatures available.
Inside, the Q4 e-tron gets Audi’s largest touchscreen system yet – measuring up to 11.6 inches – while including a satellite navigation system using Google Earth. A new augmented reality head-up display will be available as an optional extra, while a new touch-sensitive control steering wheel makes its debut, featuring a cool flattened top and bottom.
The Q4 also prioritises comfort, too, with a boot measuring up to 535 litres, or 1,490 litres with the rear seats folded – similar figures to the brand’s mid-size Q5 SUV, which has noticeably greater dimensions.
Prices for the Q4 e-tron start from £40,750 for the ‘35 e-tron Sport’ model, rising to £65,070 for the top-spec ‘50 e-tron Quattro Sport’. The standard Q4 is available to order now, with first cars arriving in June.
Full details haven’t yet been confirmed for the Sportback, though it’s likely to command a £2,500 premium over the standard car. This model will be available to order from June, with first customer cars expected in September.
