Audi teases new e-tron quattro concept ahead of Frankfurt

Audi has teased its new e-tron quattro SUV concept with a series of new sketches and mockups ahead of it’s unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

Built from the ground up as an all-new, all-electric SUV with a potential range of more than 310 miles, the e-tron quattro is scheduled to enter production and go on sale by 2018.

Using technology first developed for the R8 e-tron, the e-tron quattro uses the same Audi ‘Aerosthetics’ design language to reduce drag while maintaining a dynamic, eye-catching look.

With a sleek, coupe-like design, the concept also features moveable aerodynamic elements on the front, sides and rear, with a drag coefficient of 0.25 that sets a new record for the SUV segment.

Based on Audi’s second-generation modular platform, it fits in between the Q5 and Q7 in length, with a spacious interior cabin which the marque says has enough room for four people in total.

Power comes courtesy of a large lithium-ion battery positioned between the axles below the passenger compartment, which lowers its centre of gravity to improve handling and drivability.

A total of three electric motors, one for the front axle and two for the rear, drive all four wheels for an ‘electrified quattro’ system, though performance figures have yet to be released.

However, more is expected to be known when the Audi e-tron quattro concept makes its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which starts from 17th September this year.
