Every year, the Caravan and Motorhome Club awards vehicles with prizes for having the best towing attributes.
The judges put each car in their respective categories through their paces at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, before deciding on the winners of the 10 awards.
This year, the accolades were shared out between seven cars, and we go into detail of each category winner here.
Caravan Weight Under 1100kg – Volkswagen Polo SEL 1.0 TSI 115PS DSG
For the Volkswagen supermini, the judges said it was an ‘outstanding car’ and scored well in passenger comfort and on the brake test. The Polo beat the Citroen C4 Space Tourer, Seat Atona and Skoda Octavia hatch to the award.
Caravan Weight 1100kg - 1350kg – Peugeot 3008 Allure BlueHDi 180 EAT8
The chic 3008 was described as a ‘great all-rounder’ by the judges and scored highly across the tests. It topped fellow Peugeots, the 308 SW and 5008 GT, as well as Skoda’s Karoq and the Volkswagen T-Roc.
Caravan Weight 1350kg - 1500kg – Volvo XC40 D4 AWD First Edition
As a model that has performed well across all categories since its launch, it’s no surprise the XC40 won an award here. The D4 version beat a petrol T5 model to the prize, with the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Mazda 6 Tourer also failing to win.
Caravan Weight over 1700kg – Volkswagen Touareg R-Line Tech 3.0 V6 TDI SCR 4MOTION 286PS Tiptronic
In the heavyweight category, the 2018 Touareg came out on top, thanks to its refined driving style and great styling. The VW beat Land Rover’s Disocvery, two Ssangyong models and two Mercedes options.
Pick-Up – Volkswagen Amarok Highline 3.0 V6 TDI 4MOTION 258PS Auto
Going up against the Mitsubishi L200 and Ssangyong Musso, the Volkswagen Amarok successfully defended the prize it won last year by being a great all-round option and offering great visibility.
Best Large Family Towcar – ŠKODA Kodiaq Edition 2.0TDI 190PS 4x4 DSG
Skoda’s large SUV proved to be the most favourable family car for caravan enthusiasts and beat five rivals to the prize. The judges pointed out its adaptable interior layout and how much space was on offer for passengers.
Caravan Weight 1500kg - 1700kg, Best Family Towcar, and Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year 2019 – Volvo XC60 D5 PowerPulse AWD R-Design
The major winner of the event was the Volvo XC60 D5 and the judges were thoroughly impressed by the model’s overall ability to drive and tow without much hassle. Quoted as being the ‘ideal car for caravanners’, the Volvo XC60 beat all of the category winners to the overall prize, as well as multiple others in the two categories it also got the top spot.
