BMW 3 Series adds most efficient sport model

BMW is expanding its 3 Series Saloon and Touring range by adding an EfficientDynamics Sport (ED Sport) specification. It combines the sporty design of the 3 Series Sport trim with the class-leading efficiency offered by the 320d EfficientDynamcis engine.

Available to order now, the new 320d ED Sport is priced from £30,895 for the saloon or from £32,285 for the Touring estate.

Based on the ED Plus model which itself was recently introduced to the 3 Series, the new ED Sport is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel producing 161bhp - that’s 20bhp less than a standard 320d model.

The turbodiesel for the ED Sport can be mated with either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic. Although it’s less powerful than a standard 320d spec, the ED Sport can still cover the 0-62mph sprint in 7.8 seconds (8.1 for the Touring) and hit a top speed of 143mph (138mph for the Touring).

While it looks far sportier than your average EfficientDynamics BMW model, the 3 Series ED Sport still records a combined fuel consumption of up to 70.6mpg for the saloon, or 67.3mpg for the Touring.

CO2 emissions are also from 104g/km and from 111g/km for the two body styles respectively. That means the 3 Series ED Sport saloon occupies Band B for Vehicle Excise Duty, while the Touring is in Band C.

Examples of the sportier body styling mentioned earlier for this ED model includes Active Air Flaps integrated into the front-grille for improved aerodynamic performance and a lower suspension set-up.

Standard equipment for the 320d ED Sport includes 17-inch lightweight alloy wheels, a Business Navigation system and heated sports front seats. 18-inch and 19-inch alloy wheels are available as an option. BMW comments that compared to a standard 320d EfficientDynamics, the ED Sport adds £840 worth of extra kit for just £500 more than the ED Plus specification.

BMW also says that owners of the 320d ED Sport can also benefit from a low cost of ownership thanks to the £350 increase in residual value of the vehicle over the ED Plus.
