BMW has confirmed that it will be putting a Touring version of its upcoming M3 into production.
Marking the first time that an M3 Touring will have been offered in the sports car’s 34-year history, the announcement has been met with much interest by enthusiasts and fans who have been questioning whether such a model would ever be produced for years.
Set to arrive in 2022, the M3 Touring will go up against rivals such as the Audi RS4 Avant and Mercedes-AMG C63S Estate. The new estate version will sit alongside saloon and M4-badged coupe variants, as well as a convertible model. Those initial variants are set to be revealed in full next month.
Though little has been disclosed about the powertrain due to be used in the upcoming M3, BMW has said that it will be a six-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit. Its power output is believed to be around 500bhp, bringing it into line with other rivals in the segment.
An initial image - which was posted to BMW M’s Instagram account - shows the rear end of the car which incorporates a similar design to the current 3 Series Touring, albeit with some significant changes. The most noticeable of these is the inclusion of four exhaust pipes - a feature which has been incorporated on nearly every generation of M3.
Despite consistent pressure from fans to create one, it has taken up until now for BMW to produce an M3 Touring. A working prototype of the E46-generation M3 was created but never went into production.
