BMW reveals iX3 all-electric SUV concept

The German brand looks to expand its i all-electric line-up with an SUV-based model, with this one having a range of 249 miles.

BMW has revealed the iX3 concept, which combines SUV styling and functionality with an all-electric powertrain as the brand looks to expand its electric vehicle offering.

Unveiled at the 2018 Auto China show in Beijing, the iX3 uses the brand’s fifth generation eDrive system, which includes more powerful batteries that offer more performance, range and take up less space.

As another step forward for BMW, the iX3 uses a structure that can employ all types of drive setup – front, rear and all-wheel – as well as capable of having internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and all-electric powertrains mounted onto it – making the brand more flexible than ever.

Mounted on to the chassis in this instance is a 268bhp all-electric setup using a 70 kWh battery pack that allows up to 249 miles of range – with a 150 kw fast-charging point capable of refilling the battery in just 30 minutes.

The exterior design is very similar to that of the brand’s X3 in terms of shape and size, but the detailing makes it obvious that it is a BMW i vehicle.

The brand’s iconic kidney grille is in place, but it is closed off to improve aerodynamic efficiency and is highlighted in blue, while the rear diffuser is smoothed over with the lack of an exhaust.

The concept also has light-alloy wheels with an aerodynamic design and a Moonstone silver paint job that contrasts the bright blue detailing on the skirts.

This design is likely to be the base of BMW i’s first all-electric SUV, which will be part of BMW’s overall aim to release 25 electrified models by 2025, 12 of which will be all-electric.
