BP claims new 'superfuel' can add up to 21 miles to your car

BP has unveiled a brand-new fuel range, which it claims can boost the fuel economy of your car by as much as 21 miles per tank fo fuel.

The product of five years’ of research and development, the fuels have been dubbed ‘BP Ultimate with ACTIVE Technology’, and is currently being rolled out across BP’s 1,298 fuel stations across the UK.

Although the new Ultimate fuel costs around 10p more per litre than standard unleaded or diesel, BP claims that it can deliver up to 21 miles extra over standard fuel every time you fill up the tank.

Active engine-cleaning technology

Anne-Marie Corr, BP’s vice president of fuel technology, said that motorists will be able to see the benefits immediately, but that it works best when the engine has covered at least 6,200 miles.

The so-called ‘superfuel’ increases the car’s mileage by fighting dirt build-up inside the car’s engine and fuel injectors, which can clog up over time and damage the car’s ability to perform as it should.

Although engine cleaning fuels are nothing new, after Shell’s V-Power was introduced five years ago, BP claims that the Ultimate with ACTIVE Technology fuel is entirely different.

Claimed boost of up to 21 miles

However, the company has remained tight-lipped about the exact constituents and active ingredients that make the fuel work, claiming that several patents for it are still pending.

Similar designer fuels have not enjoyed the success their makers expected, after the Formula Shell fuel introduced in 1986 was linked to increased wear on the inlet valves of car engines.

BP notes, however, that its new fuel range has been tested in a wide range of applications and says it’s safe for use in older engines as well as new generation downsized turbo engines as well.
