Exploring Toyota’s Hybrid range

With seven distinctive models on offer, here’s all you need to know and the options available on Toyota’s hybrid range.

Toyota has been a pioneer for hybrid technology since the introduction of the Prius back in 1997, and in the years since, the Japanese brand has continued to develop and improve the technology.

Currently, Toyota offers seven hybrid vehicles in its fleet – three of which are in the Prius family – and all offer low CO2 emissions and great fuel consumption.

Based on the five-door hatchback, the hybrid version is fitted with a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated with an electrical system to return up 76.3mpg and emit 84g/km CO2. Available on the Active, Icon, Design and Excel models, the hybrid option for the Yaris comes with plenty of kit no matter which one you choose – including Toyota Safety Sense, a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen system and cruise control. Prices start from £16,575.

The compact crossover is available with both pure petrol and petrol-hybrid options, with the latter returning up to 74.3mpg and 86g/km CO2 from its 1.8-litre petrol-electric setup. Priced from £24,500, you get plenty of equipment as standard, such as Toyota Safety Sense, an eight-inch touchscreen media system, adaptive cruise control and dual-zone automatic climate control means you won’t be found wanting for equipment.

RAV4 Hybrid

Available solely as a hybrid in the Icon and Icon Tech trim levels, the RAV4 mid-size SUV uses a 2.5-litre petrol engine along with the electric system to return up to 53.2mpg and 122g/km CO2. This is the least efficient of the Toyota hybrids, but is still cleaner than the 2.0-litre petrol engine on offer to the RAV4 – which is less powerful as well. Priced from £29,010, the RAV4 gets vehicle stability control, pre-collision braking as part of Safety Sense and a touchscreen infotainment setup.

Prius range

Available as either the standard hybrid hatch, the Prius+ MPV or the Prius plug-in, the original mass production hybrid continues to be a front runner in hybrid mobility. Seen around cities mainly as taxis and Ubers, the Prius is rather common and with returns of up to 235mpg depending on the model you go for, it’s easy to see why. The standard model offers seating for five and starts from £24,245, while the Prius+ can seat seven and has an initial benchmark of £27,830. The Plug-In is the most advanced of the bunch by having roof-mounted solar panels, an all-electric range of 39 miles and can return emissions as low as 28g/km CO2. Prices for the Plug-In start from £29,150.
