First new Top Gear trailer lands

The BBC has released the first official look at the revamped Top Gear after releasing a trailer this afternoon.

Starring new hosts Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc and Sabine Schmitz, in addition to the mysterious Stig, the 60-second trailer features a whole host of powerful supercars and high-octane action.

The new series of Top Gear, which is due to air towards the end of May and which is the first since the departure of Clarkson, Hammond and May, is one of the most anticipated TV shows of the year.

It’ll also likely help to soothe the worries of anxious fans the world over after the show has suffered from a range of hiccups during production, including the loss of executive producer Lisa Clark.

Earlier in March, the show also courted controversy after LeBlanc and racing driver Ken Block were filmed performing donuts in an area close to the London Cenotaph.

However, the trailer offers a familiar mix of cars, celebrity guests and exotic locations with footage shot in the US, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates with cars including the Audi R8 V10.

Worth £50m a year to the BBC and the most popular programme on the BBC2 channel, there’s a lot riding on the new-look Top Gear series, while Clarkson et al are busy filming a new rival show for Amazon Prime.

In an interview with MediaGuardian last week, James May said that his show is not in a race to beat Evans to the screens, with the Amazon show estimated to arrive sometime in the autumn.

Meanwhile, the BBC is expected to announce a start date for Top Gear in the coming weeks.
