Five reasons why you should test drive the new Ford Focus

The latest version of the popular family hatchback is on its way, but why should you test drive the 2018 Focus?

Available to order now, the 2018 Ford Focus is a major introduction to the British car market when it gets on the road in September.

But can this latest version of the family hatchback prove to be as popular as previous versions, which have consistently sat in the top 10 for British sales?

We give you five reasons why you should test drive and consider the new Focus…

All-new design

It’s safe to say that the new Focus doesn’t disappoint in terms of its looks, as the latest model comes with a much sharper exterior which has drawn inspiration from the newest Fiesta. The larger grille and sharper creases give it a more dynamic look than before, with the shorter overhangs also helping that aesthetic.

Spacious interior

What typical Focus customers are after is a practical car that offers plenty of space and enough adaptability to make it useful for more than just carrying people around. Ford has ensured that this new version fills that role very well, as the Focus comes with a 341-litre boot space – a good size in the segment – that can be extended to 1,320 litres when the split rear bench is folded down flat. The estate version offers up to 1,653 litres of storage space, which is impressive for a vehicle of its size.

Driving dynamics

Since the first generation made a name for itself with how it drives back in 1998, each subsequent Focus has held onto that great driving feel, including the latest model. The steering is accurate and well-weighted, and the suspension setup is excellent, allowing for the bumps in the road to be soaked up and great driving in one fell swoop. ST-Line options are firmer, but most of the range in incredibly comfortable – boding well for ST and RS models in the future.

Lots of tech

To make sure the Focus stays up-to-date, Ford has fitted the Focus with several pieces of useful tech for everyday driving. Models can be fitted with active park assist that means the vehicle takes control of the manoeuvre into parallel and perpendicular spaces. There’s also Ford Co-Pilot360 system which includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go, as well as lane keeping assist.

Models can also be fitted with Ford’s first head-up display which gives the driver important information, such as speed and navigation instructions, and traffic sign recognition so you know the speed limit and other road instructions.

The Sync3 infotainment system is the latest setup from Ford, and with it you get a touchscreen and voice control, which can be activated on the steering wheel. Wireless charging and a B&O Play sound system can also be fitted.

Good value

With the Focus a reliable entry into Britain’s best-selling car charts, the starting price of £17,930 only ensures that customers will be interested in the family hatchback. Although prices can reach as much as £30,000 for the Vignale premium option, most customers will be looking at those in the mid-range – ones priced from around £20,000. Considering the equipment each model comes with, that is an offer not to be ignored.
